Wednesday's End of September Hodgepodge

Visit Joyce and join the fun!

1. When is the last time you experienced nostalgia?

The only thing I can think of is seeing a glass Coca-Cola bottle.  I remember when I was a little girl the local gas station had a soda machine.  You put the coins in, open the door and pull out a glass bottle of soda.  I think the machine had a bottle opener on it.  I gave up drinking soda in January.  I love it and know once I start drinking it I will crave it so am trying to be extreme.

2. September 29th is National Coffee Day. Do we need this? Ha! So are you a coffee drinker? If so how many cups per day, and tell us how you like it. Is there a recipe you enjoy that calls for coffee as one of the ingredients?

I am more of a tea drinker although I like coffee.  My husband does not like the smell of coffee (can you imagine?) so I don't make it every day.  I like it regular, in NY that means with milk and sugar.  That is how we order it in a deli.  Delis and diners have the best coffee, better than any specialty shop.  I do not know of a recipe that calls for coffee.

3. Do you find praise or criticism to be more motivating? Explain.

Praise is more motivating to me.  I like making people happy and a job well done.  Receiving words of praise is an encouragement to do that.

4.  What's a television series you keep coming back to and re-watching?

Little House on the Prairie.  That show never gets old and it is family friendly.

5. As the month of September draws to a close give us three words to describe your mood.

Tired, mellow, hopeful.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

It hasn't felt much like Fall here yet.  I am looking forward to the crispness in the air, burning my fall scented candles, and wearing clothes other than capris and t-shirts.

Wednesday's Aging Hodgepodge

Visit Joyce and join the fun!

1. What's one thing you learned at the ripe old age of whatever age you are now?

It is not good for people to be isolated from one another.  I think I always knew this to a certain degree but with COVID I really have seen it.  It is especially hard for the elderly and those who are limited in going out to start.

2. I read here a list of foods that can help you look younger-

extra virgin olive oil, green tea, fatty fish, dark chocolate, vegetables, flaxseeds, pomegranates, avocados, tomatoes, spices, bone broth

How many of the foods listed have you tried? How many do you eat regularly? Your favorite from the list?

I have tried all but flaxseeds and bone broth.  I regularly eat extra virgin olive oil and vegetables.  My favorite is dark chocolate.

3. Something you miss from the 'good old days'? When were the good old days anyway?

Being excited to watch a TV show because if you missed it you couldn't watch it anywhere else and there was no "on-demand".  Everything is available so easily these days, it doesn't seem to make anything feel special.

4. What are two or three of the most rewarding things to be found in growing older?

The little things don't matter as much as you once thought.  What other people think doesn't matter as much as it once did.

5. What's your favorite part of your life right now?

My family.  Watching my kids as they grow and mature.  Seeing them use the gifts God has given them is a blessing!

 Happy Birthday Week Joyce!

Wednesday's Labor Hodgepodge

Visit Joyce and join the fun!

1. Something you've done in recent days or months that might be described as a labor of love?

Getting things ready for school to start.  My son started 10th grade and since we homeschool I organized all of his books and my paperwork so we would be off to a smooth start.  I wanted to help my daughter who started college but she had it all figured out.  I am adjusting ;)

2. Last time you 'worked your fingers to the bone'?

Back in July when I helped a friend move out of her home.  I deep cleaned after it was empty.

3. According to a recent survey people named the following ten jobs as the hardest-nurse, doctor, paramedic, police officer, firefighter, surgeon, healthcare worker, bomb squad, farmer, and prison warden. Of the jobs listed which would you say is the hardest? The one you'd most like to do? Least like to do? What's one job you would add to the list?

The hardest- a surgeon.  I would not want to do any of these jobs.  If I had to pick one it would be a farmer because although it is super hard work you aren't dealing with life or death situations.  I would least likely want to be part of the bomb squad.  My heart races and hands shake at the thought ;)
I would add teachers to the list.  I know some people think teachers have it easy but to be an effective, good teacher is very hard work.

4. A recipe you make that is labor intensive, but worth it?

Eggplant Parmesan.  I make it every year for my husband's birthday, which happens to be in a couple of weeks.  There are so many steps to it and it takes a long time to make.  There are always so many pots and pans to clean when I am finished.  It is his favorite dish and he gets so happy when I make it so that makes it worth it.

5. Last job you did or task you completed that required teamwork?

I can't think of anything.  It feels like so long since I've worked with anyone.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

Beware of the newest scam going around.  Last night I received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Amazon.  The Caller ID came up "Amazon Customer Service" and it even had the correct phone number.  The woman said they noticed suspicious activity on my account and wanted to know if anyone in Ohio had access to my account.  I said no.  She said there was an order placed for an iPhone for $750 and she would need to transfer me to the security department.  Then she asked if I had my cell phone so they could call me.  I said no way, connect me through this line.  She said no she needed my cell phone.  I told her she is being reported and it is a scam!  She calmly said "Ok, you can do that".  I hung up and immediately called Amazon to report it.  There wasn't any suspicious activity on my account.  These hackers can do just about anything including making whatever they want come up on Caller ID.  I hope they figure out a way to stop these phone scams.  It is sad to hear of people getting taken, especially the elderly.

Wednesday's September Hodgepodge

Visit Joyce and join the fun!

1. The Hodgepodge lands on the second day of a brand new month. Tell us one thing you're looking forward to in September.

Cooler weather!  I love being able to open the windows and have crisp, cool air blowing through the house.  Although that may not happen yet.  Some years September has been very warm.

2. Do you enjoy browsing second-hand shops? Last thing you bought or 'inherited' second hand?

No, I don't enjoy browsing second-hand shops.  It just is not my thing.  The last thing I bought second hand was a beautiful cherry china cabinet.  It was never used but was sitting in someone's house.  Her mother bought it when she was moving and then found out it wouldn't fit in her new place.  The daughter had no room for it and listed it on FB Marketplace.  We had to rent a truck from Home Depot but even with that expense it was a steal!

3. Something you had second thoughts about after committing to, purchasing, or posting/commenting  online?

It is something I committed to but if I post it here I will have second thoughts about posting it online!

4. What's a product or service you use that you'd rate as second to none?

Amazon Prime.  Even though there were some delays in the height of COVID, I still can get almost anything I want or need delivered to my door in two days.  Their return policy is very good and hassle-free.

5. Something you do so often or that comes so naturally to you it's second nature ?

Taking off my shoes when I come into the house.  I have been doing that for years and don't even think about it.  It keeps the dirt and germs from the bottom of our shoes from getting tracked through the house.  I have indoor flip-flops and on a couple of occasions I have walked outside wearing them.  They then became outside shoes ;)

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I have been on a weight roller coaster for a long time.  I lose weight, then I gain it.  Repeat.  Last week I impulsively joined WW digital.  I have only told a few friends but am trying not to say too much in case I don't stick with it.  I lost 4 lbs. so far and haven't had to eliminate any foods.  If I want something, I work it into my points and enjoy it.  Here's hoping I stick with it!
