Wednesday's Words of Wisdom

"If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." James 2:15:17

In Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible, he writes, "What will such a charity as this, that consists in bare words, avail either you or the poor? Will you come before God with such empty shows of charity as these? You might as well pretend that your love and charity will stand the test without acts of mercy as think that a profession of faith will bear you out before God without works of piety and obedience."

  1. I am going through the concordance "faith" was the word I was gong through! I cannot wait till I get to this verse. Faith without works is dead. Thanks for sharing Matthew Henry's commentary. I love doing studies with commentaries and others who have gone before us. They seem to offer such profound yet simple insights you know?

  2. It's like the age old, "Hey, how ya doing?" but not really wanting to hear anything but fine! I am concentrating on hearing the "other than fine" response...being genuine! Thank you for the reminder of what true charity is: seeing the need and filling it!
