Wednesday's Hodgepodge

Link up with Joyce and join the fun!
1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's English...here's the list for 2013-

fiscal cliff, kick the can down the road, double down, job creators/creation, passion/passionate, yolo (an acronym for you only live once), spoiler alert, bucket list, trending, superfood, boneless wings, and guru
Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why. Go here to read more about how the words were chosen.

I would have to say yolo. Really? I mean do we really need all these acronyms? I think it has become worse since texting has increased. Plus it would be more accurate to say “you only live once here on earth”.

2. When was the last time you rode a train? Where did you go?

The last train ride I remember was in 2004. We were in Amish country Lancaster, PA and visited the Stroudsburg Railroad. We just went a few miles down the tracks and back to see some scenic views.

3. Bagels-yay or nay? Favorite 'flavor'? Favorite topping?

Yay, for sure! I don’t think there is a New Yorker who would say nay. My favorite is a lightly baked sesame. I love walnut raisin cream cheese but would only eat it if I knew who made it. If it is warm, butter is my favorite. A sandwich of turkey breast on it is good too. Or just break off a piece and enjoy right out of the bag. I also like it dunked in my tea. I told you it was a yay ;) I have some great bagel memories. When I was in high school my best friend and I worked together in a bagel store. Talk about good times. Also when I was in elementary school I had a friend Alyson. I would often sleep over her house on Saturday nights. At midnight her Mom would take us to the bagel store to get bagels, lox and cream cheese. It was so much fun to be out that late when I was so young.

4. 'Tis the season of awards shows...if you could star in a movie already made which one would you choose?

“Lean on Me” with Morgan Freeman. He plays Joe Clark, a NJ principal who turns a troubled high school around with what some may consider “unconventional” methods. As a teacher I always liked the “difficult” students and found that they would somehow appear in my class ;)

5. The move towards single gender classrooms has been making the news in recent months....what say you? Do you think kids perform better if seperated by gender and are taught differently or is that discrimination? If you're a parent, is this something you'd support in regard to your own children?

I think there are some desperate measures taking place to try to solve the education problems in our country today. I don’t think separating boys and girls is the answer. Plus males and females need to learn how to get along. I would not support this as a parent.

6. What's your favorite thing about staying in a hotel?

I would have to say room service. Not having to cook or clean up afterwards is a treat for me. I can’t say I enjoy staying in hotels. I always have to Lysol everything to make sure it is sanitized when we get there and then check the beds. I guess that explains why I don’t stay in hotels often ;) I was just thinking tonight how nice it would be to have a Winnebago to travel in.

7. Do you have a 'word' for 2013? What's the story behind your choice?

No, I don’t have a word for 2013. Maybe I’ll have some ideas after reading some hodgepodges though.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I haven't been posting much on my blog so I am thankful for Wednesday's Hodgepodge to keep it going :)
I am unable to upload pictures to my blog posts lately.  When I go to "insert image" on my blogger page there is no longer an option to upload pictures.   There is an upload button but then nothing happens.  I can upload from my blog, picasa, webcam or phone but not from the pictures stored on my computer.  Any tips?

  1. Theresa...I had the same problem with uploading pictures until someone suggested I switch my browser from Internet Explorer to Firefox or Google Chrome. I'm now using Google Chrome and am no longer having any issues.

  2. Glad you got an answer to your question. The Hodgepodge aims to please : )

That is a sweet childhood memory. It really is the little things that mean a lot when we look back.

  4. I have to say that my nieces texting me drives me crazy. Most of the time I don't know what they are saying. Lean on me is a great movie. They claim to be working on the issue. I think they want us to go to Chrome. Anyway you can download in HTML. That one still works.

  5. Love your Winterwonderland design! Always such fun to read everyone's answers to HP because we all usually have such different answers. Blessings for a happy day!

  7. I love bagels, however as a California girl I have to make due with Einstein's bagels or the ones at Costco. My friend and I used to meet at Einstein's for bagels' and fellowship every other week. Sweet!
I use Firefox, switched out of Explorer because of all the viruses it left us open to.
As for separating boys and girls, in the older grades it seems so much simpler than dealing with all the hormone stuff. HOWEVER, in the long run I don't think it is good for the students themselves. They do need to learn how the "other half" learns and applies knowledge.
LOVE room service! Sadly, I am the room service provider in our camping trailer :-)

  8. I love Bagels as well! However, as a California girl, I have to make due with Einstein's. My friend and I used to meet there every other week for fellowship and good food. great times!

I use Firefox as well, I got tired of all the viruses Explorer left us open to.

Separating the sexes for school seems a great answer to all those hormone issues, but in the long run I think it causes more harm. These youth need to find out how the opposite sex thinks, learns, and applies knowledge as well as emotional issues in order to help them later on in life.

As for Room service, I'm all for it! Sadly, I am the one to fulfill those requests in our camping trailer :-)
